Burgers, Beer & Breviary

As Pope St. Pius XII declared:

“They also are to be commended who strive to make the liturgy even in an external way a sacred act in which all who are present may share. This can be done in more than one way, when, for instance, the whole congregation, in accordance with the rules of the liturgy, either answer the priest in an orderly and fitting manner, or sing hymns suitable to the different parts of the Mass, or do both, or finally in high Masses when they answer the prayers of the minister of Jesus Christ and also sing the liturgical chant.” (para.105 Mediator Dei)

He goes further to quote his predecessor (para. 192, M.D.), Pope Pius XI, from his own encyclical Divini Cultus:

“In order that the faithful may more actively participate in divine worship, let them be made once more to sing the Gregorian Chant, so far as it belongs to them to take part in it. It is most important that when the faithful assist at the sacred ceremonies, or when pious sodalities take part with the clergy in a procession, they should not be merely detached and silent spectators, but, filled with a deep sense of the beauty of the Liturgy, they should sing alternately with the clergy or the choir, as it is prescribed.” (Divini Cultus, Pius XI)

In this vein of congregants praying together, TSG# 51 makes it easier for families to stick around after Mass and attend Breviary sung by St. Dunstan’s Schola by grilling burgers and serving beer: hence the nickname “Burgers, Beer & Breviary”.

Ordinarily there are four sets of fathers and sons assigned to each BBB for the various needs and many of the non-assigned families will come and assist as they can.

The schedule is ordinarily the first Sunday of the month and it is noteworthy that some of the TSG #51 boys sing Breviary with St. Dunstan’s Schola.
